Golden Eighties

The setting for GOLDEN EIGHTIES is a shopping mall recreated in a studio based on the “Toison d’Or” gallery in Brussels. Stylistically inspired by Technicolor musicals, Akerman tells the stories of love, longing and desire of a group of women who work in a clothing store, a hair salon and a café. In this brightly lit consumer paradise, with its gleaming displays and storefronts full of promises, everyone becomes at once spectator and performer – a stage that attracts all eyes. Yet other tonalities also find their way into this light-hearted, pop-inspired production: a long-lost lover brings the pain of a Holocaust survivor and the melancholy of a love that has long since faded to the surface.
